Honoring Indonesia’s Fishermen

At the edge of the nation, before the sun rises over the horizon, fishermen have already set out to sea. They do not sail merely to catch fish; they help sustain the pulse of the nation's life.

The sea is Indonesia's vast frontier. It is where fishermen learn that courage does not simply mean challenging the storm, but having the strength to continue their journey when difficult times come. It is where they understand that livelihood is a responsibility, and that love for one's country must be demonstrated not only through words, but also through dedication and service.

Through the hands of fishermen, food reaches the tables of millions. Through their courage and perseverance, the sea continues to provide a source of life. Yet we often forget that behind the independence we celebrate on land, there is another struggle taking place every day at sea.

Therefore, on August 17, 2026, let us honor Indonesia's fishermen—not out of charity or sympathy, but out of respect for those who help safeguard our food security, protect the sea, and uphold an important part of Indonesia's dignity.

True independence exists when those who sustain the nation are also able to live with dignity—when they are respected, protected, and given the opportunity to build a better future.

Fishermen are not merely people who catch fish.

They are guardians of life.

They are the face of Indonesia's courage.

And the seas they navigate are a trust bestowed by God, one that must be preserved for generations to come.

May our fishermen prosper, our seas remain sustainable, and our nation grow stronger.
