Benny not only helped PDI, but also protected Megawati, the General Chair of PDI at that time. Even though his actions were contrary to his superior, Suharto, Benny still adhered to his principles.
In his conversation with red beret officers, Agum Gumelar and AM Hendropriyono, Benny spoke firmly, "We have to protect Megawati. We can't let her fall. I know the old man (Soeharto) wants to get rid of her, but that's not fair," he said firmly. Benny became like a brother to Megawati, with the belief that if not now, Megawati would be too late to become president in the future.
In 1993, Benny may have been marginalized from Suharto's circle of power, but his influence in defending Megawati and adhering to her principles remains an important part of this unforgettable hero's life journey.
