Mpu Narotama, the Prime Minister intertwined in the glory of the Kahuripan Kingdom under the reign of King Airlangga, is not just a faithful servant but the main architect of an epic narrative that transcends historical boundaries. Throughout his long journey, Narotama becomes not only a witness to history but also the author of every page of events involving selfless dedication, meaningful escape, and grand victories for the Isyana dynasty.
The epic journey of Narotama and Airlangga in Java in the year 1006 opens the door to a tragic tale. They face the sudden attack of King Wurawari, who seizes Dharmawangsa Teguh. Their escape through the mountainous forest, traversing Wanagiri/Wonogiri, Tamwlang, Watugaluh, and Jolotundho, is not just a historical event but an adventure that enriches the meaning of bravery, loyalty, and the spirit of struggle.
The sacred site of Mahapatih Narotama, adjacent to the Jolotundo baths in Mojokerto, becomes a place that preserves these historical traces. The title Rakryan Kanuruhan, bestowed upon him in 1009, not only reflects his contribution to rebuilding the Isyana Kingdom but also inscribes his name in the Pucangan inscription until 1041, silently witnessing deep wisdom and spiritual heritage.
The climax of Narotama's epic occurs in 1032 when, alongside King Airlangga and Mpu Niti, they exact revenge on King Wurawari. This victory not only restores honor to the Isyana Dynasty but also solidifies Narotama's role as a moral and wise pillar amid complex political turmoil.
However, NAROTAMA is more than just a loyal servant of King Airlangga. He is a scholar and prime minister who governs with wisdom. His full title, Rakryan Kanuruhan Mpu Dharmamurti Narottama Danasura, not only illustrates his scholarship but also his unwavering dedication.
In the Pucangan Inscription, it is written: "In the year 963 Tarikh Cyaka (1042 CE), Airlangga, the first son of King Udayana of the Bedahulu Kingdom in Bali, celebrated his marriage with the daughter of King Dharmawangsa in Kahuripan." The wedding festivities were interrupted due to the invasion and conquest by the Wurawari Kingdom, forcing Airlangga into exile.
